The Grape Centre
Sémillon
Sémillon is a renowned white grape variety originating from France, where it plays a key role in the production of some of the world's most esteemed wines. It is especially significant in the Sauternes and Barsac regions, where under favorable conditions, it attracts a unique fungus known as Botrytis cinerea, or Noble Rot. This natural process, when combined with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, results in the creation of the celebrated sweet wines of Sauternes, hailed as some of the finest globally. In the Graves region, Sémillon is blended with Sauvignon Blanc to craft elegant dry white wines.
Beyond France, Sémillon has found great success in regions like the Hunter Valley in Australia and New Zealand, producing both dry and late-harvest Botrytis-affected sweet wines. Here, it is often blended with Chardonnay to create complex wines. It also thrives in wine regions of the USA, South Africa, and Chile, where it is typically blended with Sauvignon Blanc to produce both dry and sweet styles.
Wines made from Sémillon are known for their rich, waxy texture, complemented by delicate aromas of citrus, melon, and fig. In certain parts of France, Sémillon is also used as a single-varietal wine, further showcasing its versatility and unique character.
Behind the Glass: Our Sommelier of the Month
Aleksandr Nakonechnyi (Alex)
Asst. Chief Sommelier - Soneva Jani, Maldives
In the heart of the Maldives, where time slows down and sunsets seem to stretch forever, you’ll find Alexander, Assistant Chief Sommelier at Soneva one of the world’s most exclusive resorts. But Alexander is more than his title. He’s a passionate storyteller, a cellar guardian, and someone who sees wine as much more than what’s in the glass.
Originally from Russia, Alex’s path into wine wasn’t exactly textbook. “Wine felt like something sacred and unreachable,” he recalls. Early in his career, he believed only a few people in the world truly mastered it. That changed when he joined Anantara Kihavah and met Mr. Arun, a mentor who gave him a chance despite limited international experience and shaky English. “He didn’t just hire me, he believed in me,” Alex says. “He helped me become the Wine Guru I never thought I could be.”
