With over two decades in the hospitality industry and more than 15 years devoted to the world of wine, Danushka Perera has carved out a remarkable journey from humble beginnings in Sri Lanka to becoming one of the Maldives' most respected sommeliers. Born in 1983, Danushka’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

His career began in 2003 as a trainee waiter at the iconic Colombo Plaza Hotel (now Cinnamon Grand), but it was his insatiable curiosity and desire to grow that propelled him beyond borders. From the bustling elegance of Dubai’s One & Only Royal Mirage to the tranquil beauty of Seychelles' Fregate Island and Constance Ephelia, Danushka has brought his expertise to some of the world’s most luxurious destinations. In every location, he didn’t just serve wine—he curated unforgettable experiences.

It was in Dubai that his destiny took a pivotal turn, under the mentorship of renowned sommelier Steven Towler. That mentorship planted the seed for Danushka’s lifelong devotion to the craft of wine, culminating in his completion of WSET Level 3 by 2008—a rare feat in the Maldives at the time.

Today, as Chief Sommelier at Baros Maldives, Danushka continues to elevate wine programs with a sharp eye for sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and innovation. His approach blends classic elegance with tropical flair, curating wine lists that reflect both terroir and taste, all while overcoming the logistical and climatic challenges of remote island living.

From hosting legendary vertical tastings of 1855 Bordeaux First Growths to collaborating on delicate sake pairings with Shiratake Brewery, Danushka’s career has been defined by creative vision and global collaborations. He has welcomed esteemed winemakers from Burgundy to South Africa, offering guests world-class experiences that seamlessly marry wine, cuisine, and place.
