The Famed Clos of Champagne

In the world of Champagne, a label with name of a Clos (walled vineyard) means exclusivity and differentiation from the rest. It in turn gains them fantastic prices in the market. There are 39 known Clos in the Champagne region and here we will have a look at the top 6 of the Clos.

Clos des Goisses (Owner: Champagne Philipponnat)

The premier cru classified single vineyard birthed the idea of Single vineyard champagnes. Clos de Goisses has been under the care of Philipponnat family for more than a century. It was in 1935 when Pierre Philipponnat acquired the vineyard.

A fully walled 5.5 hectare of vineyard with fantastic terroir. At a 45-degree angle it looms over the Marne River, making it one of the steepest slopes in the Champagne region. The resulting grapes are boosted by the warming effects of the river and the steep, fully south facing slopes, two factors which combined to produce mean vineyard temperatures 1.5-2° higher than the rest of Champagne. While it’s a mix of Pinot noir (3.5 ha) and Chardonnay (2.5 ha) plantings, back in the days it was completely Chardonnay. The Philipponnat, Clos de Goisses is said to be one of the most powerful and durable wines in all of champagne in existence and a wine that ages very well retaining its freshness for a very long time.

Clos du Mesnil (Owner: Champagne Krug)

While Clos de Goisses was the pioneer; Clos du Mesnil is pretty much the most famous Clos. It is the finest Chardonnay site out of Burgundy Grand Cru. The parcel was discovered during a vineyard inspection by Rémi and Henri Krug, who had just purchased 6.5 ha of vineyards. While inspection they found this walled plot which was walled and planted in 1698

The Clos du Mesnil is a 1.84 ha walled vineyard within the most prestigious and expensive cru in Champagne. Krug has owned it now for a long time and started selling the wine in the 1979 vintage. A 100% Chardonnay magic; around 12000 bottles per vintage, demanding great prices worldwide.

Clos du Ambonnay (Owner: Champagne Krug)

After honoring Chardonnay, the Krug brothers turned to celebrate Pinot Noir and then in 1991, they discovered Clos d’Ambonnay, a walled plot situated on the edge of the village, on the south-eastern slope of the Montagne de Reims. This precious parcel of just 0.68 hectares (one-third the size of Clos du Mesnil) has been surrounded by protective walls since 1766.

They acquired the plot in 1994 and 1995 created the first vintage. A total of 5000 bottles which were released in 2007. This tiny plot produces one of the rarest Pinot Noir based Champagne in the world; to the extent that only 6 vintages have been ever released. The first being 1995 and the latest being 2006; making it the limited 30000 bottles ever produced.

Clos du Moulin (Owner: Champagne Cattier)

One of the most important vineyards of Montagne de Reims. The Cattier family first started planting vines in Chigny-les-Roses, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, in 1625. The Cattier family bought Clos du Moulin, in 1950, and the first release was in 1955.

With only 6,900 bottles of the current bottling, and the Champagne is always a blend of three vintages.

Clos Saint Hilaire (Owner: Champagne Billecart Salmon)

Le Clos Saint-Hilaire got its name from the local church of Église Saint-Hilaire and belongs to the Billecart-Salmon family. A single hectare (0.98 to be precise) of land producing one of the best single vineyard champagnes ever.

In the late 1950s, with the enjoyment of younger generations in mind, François Roland-Billecart’s grandmother planted the land behind the family home to flowers and plants. For more than a decade the family had enjoyed the space as a communal area, before Mathieu’s uncle in 1964, convinced of the potential of the plot planted it entirely to Pinot Noir.

Planted in 1964, the vines were not considered established nor mature enough to warrant producing a standalone wine until 1995. It took more than three decades of meticulous viticulture, working the land organically to shape the site’s potential.

Clos de Pompadour (Owner: Champagne Pommery)

The Clos Pompadour is situated in the town of Reims and is the largest clos in Champagne with 25ha of Chardonnay (75%), Pinot (20%) and Meunier (5%) mostly planted in the 1960s. The inaugural Clos Pompadour was released in 2011 using grapes from the 2002 vintage only, although, unlike the current release, the first release was classified as a non-vintage.
